How To Turn Your Porch Into A Comfy Outdoor Space

When we built our home one of the things I wanted to duplicate from our previous home was our covered porch.  It is such a great way to entertain and relax.  My husband and I love sitting out there and either taking a nap, reading a book or just visiting with friends.  Our porch started with all neutrals and stone.  Doesn’t sound very relaxing does it?  It wasn’t very inviting either.  I went on a mission to add to it and create a comfy outdoor space.  I learned a few things when designing our home and worked with The Iron Grate to give it that comfortable mood.

To create a comfy outdoor space, I encourage you to use a lot of textures.  Layering blankets and pillows is key.  I love a great cotton blanket or something that is linen.  The Iron Grate stocks them at their store and I bought the ones shown in the photographs.  Using a variety of patterns brings a sense of coziness to the space.  For example, mixing plaid with a stripe adds interest and visual texture.  As long as the colors coordinate, it doesn’t have to be the same color but in the same color family.  I love to use the color wheel from Benjamin Moore.  If you can get your hands on one of these, it’s a great guide in helping you know what colors compliment each other.  Each strip has multiple color families and working with those can help create the color pallet you want.

I also like to incorporate a feeling a privacy.  Privacy gives you a sense of relaxation and eases your tensions.  Trees and shrubs provide privacy and are low maintenance.  Privacy screens are also low cost and look beautiful.  You can make your own or buy whatever is most suitable to your style.

Fireplace Sitting Area

Candles are great to have as well.  For my outdoor space I chose lanterns from The Iron Grate.  They are very stylish.  A fireplace creates a comfy atmosphere especially on the chillier evenings. Greenery is great for added color and warmth especially succulents.   They have so much variety, color and texture and they are hardy in cold and frost temperatures.  An added bonus is they require little maintenance.

Once you finalize your outdoor space, I encourage you to toast with a glass of your favorite beverage whether it be coffee in the morning or champagne in the evening and remember,  “There is nothing like staying at home for real comfort.” -Jane Austin.
