Family Christmas Traditions & Memories To Cherish

I love the holiday season and all of the fun family Christmas traditions that go along with it.  I have such fond memories growing up and playing cards at my grandparent’s house.  We would snuggle in her warm house while the snow was flying and grab something yummy to eat and play card games.  I think about how blessed I am to have had those times and memories.  Since being married I have taken on some familiar traditions and added some new ones.  I think traditions bind us together.   The memories stay with us year after year even when we are not able to be together.  It is one of those things that brings us joy around the holidays. This is why I wanted to dedicate this blog post to family traditions.

The infamous 1000 PIECE PUZZLE!  When I was a kid my grandma had one sitting out for the month of December and whenever we were over we would work on it.  It was a fun pastime while watching Christmas movies.  However I think I just love the nostalgia and not the work of “doing” the puzzle.   One year my kids and friends in the neighborhood all came together to put the 1000 Piece puzzle together and in the end there were MANY pieces missing!  Ugh!  What a disappointment it was!  I laugh now but the kids were so bummed.

Making gingerbread houses is a tradition that I started when my kids were young. I have to say there is a learning curve to it!  The first time I started it I had powdered sugar all over the kitchen.  I had the hardest time with two toddlers keeping the gingerbread house from falling down and the frosting consistency perfect.  Thank God there is Google! I did learn a great trick along the way.  Use a hot glue gun to put the house together and then only use the frosting to decorate.  It makes things so much easier!  One year we had the gingerbread house too low to the ground on a table and our golden retriever ate half of it!  It is funny to reminisce about our botched houses and the enormous messes we have made.

Family Christmas Traditions Game Time

My family also enjoys several other traditions such as playing board games, cards, baking and watching Christmas movies.  Some of my favorites movies are White Christmas and Elf.  I could watch them over and over again.  I am guessing you have a few favorites too.  Of course there are other things we love to do but sometimes we don’t have the time.  We used to go to a near by farm and cut down a tree and we also enjoy checking out the lights around town.  It used to be so magical when the kids were younger.  I hope some day when they are older they reflect back with fondness to the traditions we did as a family, and I hope they carry some of them on too!  I would love to hear about your family traditions and fun things you have done with your family.  It is so enjoyable making memories with the most important people in our lives.  Looking forward to reading about your family Christmas traditions!

Gift Guide For The Men In Your Life

In years past I have struggled to find just the “right” present, always hoping it’s something they enjoy.  No one wants to be that person where the receiver says, “Why are they buying me THIS!?”  You know, the gift of a bow tie but they never wear bow ties, let alone ties! Or that homemade gift that really should never have happened.  I did this once.  It was supposed to be a beautiful blanket but I tied two of the ends too tight and it looked more like a cape instead!  Yeah, I know….it should never have happened.  That said, I will be the first to tell you that it’s the thought that counts.  However, you need to put some of that “thought” into the gift giving process.  I have found some really exciting Christmas gifts for the men in my life so I put together a men’s gift guide.

One of the things I try to do is pay more attention to what people are saying or not saying.  This can provide clues to what they may want for Christmas.  It has helped me in the past.  For example, my husband is getting ready in the morning and complaining that his socks have holes in them.  I just go on ignoring him (lol!) but meanwhile I am thinking…”buy socks for hubby for Christmas”.  Or maybe they are grilling outside and mention they can’t see anything.  This is a good opportunity to buy them a grilling light.  I do believe it’s the thought that counts but you have to think and pay attention.

You may just need something small or you’re looking for a gift to impress so I’ve shared a variety of options from low to high priced items.  For example, I own a coat from Canada Goose.  This would be a luxury gift, however it may be just what you are looking for.  It is warm and timeless.  I also included on the gift guide socks.  Just as I mentioned above, my husband’s socks have holes in them so I bought some for him for Christmas…I hope he doesn’t read this!  Anyway, take a look and I hope this men’s gift guide makes things a little easier. If you gift any of these items and the men in your life enjoyed them please share below!

Holiday Party Outfits

The picture above is my pre-party warm up before the guests arrive! I love this time of year with the parties and festivities! I usually host some sort of gathering. I also go to either a work party or some other event.  The question remains, “What should I wear?” You know those pieces that you bring out only during the holidays? I’ve collected some staples over the years and then every year or so I like to add in a new piece. I’ve listed a few staples that help me take the guesswork out of planning holiday party outfits:

Tips For Decorating Your Doorstep This Christmas!

It’s that festive time of year when the doorstep and the house call to be decorated.  I am changing things up this year after using the same decorations for several years in a row.  It is a year to refresh.  I have to say that I like to do different types of “themes” throughout my house.  I like to have a more organic look for the front porch and then an elegant look inside our entryway.  Once inside we have another spot in the house with our home-made looking decorations and Christmas tree.  They are all my favorites and each give a different feeling.  Since this post is particularly about the front porch I want to offer you some tips that I have used for decorating: Continue Reading

PillowGrace – Rest Assured, Arise Restored

PillowGrace is such a fabulous company!  When I went to the Southern C Conference at Watercolor this past October I met the owner and founder Julie Rowland.  She is a wife, mother and successful businesswoman.   Her passion is people and love for God.  At the conference I heard her speaking from the audience as she was explaining her business and why she started it.  I thought, “I have to introduce myself to her, I want to share with her a similar experience I had.”
