For as long as I can remember I have loved having people over to my house. It brings me joy watching my guests have a good time. I know what goes into hosting a party or a small gathering. When someone recognizes this effort with a hostess gift, it makes me feel much appreciated. I want to share with you some quick tips on being a great guest and also some of my favorite hostess gifts to give when I attend a party at someone else’s house. The reason why it is important to try and be a good guest is it makes the entire event more enjoyable for all. It also gives the host an opportunity to feel good about the event and feel appreciated and respected with a hostess gift. I know when I go to someone’s home I want to make sure they are also enjoying themselves.
Below are a few minimalistic guidelines to follow.
1.) Be punctual or let the hostess know if arriving late especially if a dinner is planned.
2.) Note departure times. Do not overstay even if you are having a wonderful time and so is the hostess. They may be exhausted from all of the company. My husband and I have had people stay up to two hours past the end time. It can be tiring in more ways than one!
3.) If you have children keep an eye on them at all times. This is not your time to check out and allow your children to have the run of their house. The hostess is waiting on others needs and if their home is not “child proof” it can be stressful for the home owner.
4.) Do not use your phone and text/play games. It is important to be present as the hostess has put effort to make you feel comfortable and welcome. Give them your time because that is why they put on this event.
5.) It is polite and customary to bring a hostess gift, this shows gratitude to their efforts and it does not need to be expensive, just something thoughtful.
When I am invited to a dinner party or summer BBQ I like to bring a hostess gift to show my appreciation. Several of my go-to items to give include: a favorite wine, a potted plant, chocolates, cocktail napkins, a picture frame, specialty food items such as olive oil and vinegars, or kitchen soaps and lotions. If you bring flowers make sure they are already in a vase so the hostess does not have to trim the stems and find a vase. Serving dishes make a great gift as well, such as an olive tray, I find these locally at The Iron Grate.
If time permits, wrapping it in tissue paper is a nice touch. Let them know it is for them to enjoy later because other guests may feel awkward if they did not know to give them a gift. Be discrete when giving a hostess gift. Give the gift right away at the door and don’t expect them to open it at that time.
I love hosting parties and I also enjoy attending. When I am hosting I like to make sure people feel welcome and are enjoying themselves. Likewise, when I am at a party I like to make sure I show my appreciation with good manners. I hope you enjoy the suggestions of gifts to give to your hostess. I learned a long time ago that I enjoy giving. It is one of my “love languages” and with a few suggestions it can be fun!
