How To Refresh Your Porch For Fall

Who doesn’t love fall in the Midwest?  It is one of the best times of the year.  Football games, pumpkin spice everything, apple orchards, cozy campfires and all of the yummy goodness that goes with it.  I have great memories with my kids when they were younger playing in the leaves and going to the orchards.  They are in high school now, sniff sniff, and it isn’t the same but at least I still get to do all of the “fall” stuff just differently.  I am finding that it is still very enjoyable!  So with that said I wanted to share with you some awesome tips on decorating your porch and making it your own.  My hope is you will benefit from these as much as I have.

When beginning to decorate a project start with a foundation.  This way you can build upon it.  You can change a few key elements and transition from fall to Halloween to Thanksgiving.  I choose to use fresh grapevine as a backdrop around my porch and incorporate other items nature has to offer.  I also assembled a collection of clay pottery which can be used from season to season.  Now let’s continue with some tips:

1.) Search your surroundings for natural elements.  This will add organic and natural beauty to your display such as using tall Birch trees shown here.

2.) Use grapevine or some other vine to wrap the branches around and then drape above your door entrance.  You can pin these up quite easily.

3.)  Make sure to add layers and elevation.  I like using tree slices and wood slabs for variation.

4.) Search your shed or garage for old pots, crates, rakes or watering cans.  I love to find and use things I already have to mix it up.

5.) Don’t be afraid to incorporate artificial and real.  This can be fun and it can all work together.  For example, I used artificial cabbages and pumpkins and I feel it works!

6.) Textures and layers is very important to create interest.  You want things to be symmetrical but not matchy matchy.

7.) Lastly, as the season moves along you can add pumpkins or halloween decorations.  If you have the foundation all you have to do is add a few items to make it current for each holiday.  I love this because many years ago I would buy tons of items for fall.  Then when fall was over I would buy more items for Halloween and then again for Thanksgiving.  Doing it this way makes it more affordable, less time consuming and not overwhelming!  Good luck and enjoy!
