I enjoy having family and friends visit from out of town, I love doting on them. When I was younger I couldn’t wait to have my own place so I could host people. I think it is just “in” me to be a great hostess even if I don’t always have the time, my intentions and heart are there.
I know many people feel intimated having house guests and worry that they won’t be a great hostess. Or they worry that their guests won’t enjoy their time. The most important thing you can do is relax and be yourself. Be considerate and think about what you would like/want when staying at someone else’s home. I am sure you would agree that the material appearance of your home is not what really matters. It is the fact that your guests felt special when they stayed in your home. Below are some of the things I have done as a great hostess for an overnight guest, especially if I don’t know them particularly well:
I will set out a small basket of “goodies” in their room. This may include a granola bar, piece of fruit and water. I know that when staying with someone that is not family or a close friend it can feel awkward asking them if they have any snacks. I like my snacks and I hate getting hungry before bedtime.
In addition to snacks, I like to have some fabulous soaps arranged nicely in the bathroom. It is such a special touch and the Iron Grate has some of the best product lines. I also keep in our spare bedroom my old hairdryers, curling irons and flat irons. I can’t tell you how often people forget to bring these. It is nice because it is left in the bathroom and my guest does not feel like they are imposing on me. Sometimes I will add a magazine or two for leisure reading in the morning or at night.
I always try to have on hand some favorites for breakfast such as croissants or bagels from our local bakery, Crust. They have some fabulous cinnamon rolls and can even be ordered online! Just remember to be a great hostess to your house guests it’s the little things that tell them you care.
