The Power of Color!

Over the last 18 years, my husband and I have built and remodeled several homes.  Along the way, I feel I’ve gotten more of a “put your seat belt on, it’s going to be a fun ride” style of education as opposed to a more traditional textbook training.  One of my main takeaways has been the power of color.

Each home has had a different personality, driven by the geographic location and the color palettes we chose.  When remodeling a room, I’m always inspired by how I want to feel when sitting or working in that room.  The power of color always plays a vital role in this. For example, when I started thinking about this bathroom in my home I wanted it to have a spa-like feel, tranquil and calm.  I chose the cooler color of blue-green, it’s relaxing, clean, fresh and makes me feel happy.  We started the design by pulling inspiration from multiple pictures and design elements that I love.  To me, this bathroom has an Old Hollywood feel.

One thing I have learned along the way is that you have to do what YOU love regardless of color trends.  Of course you want to be current, but the most important thing you have to do is what makes you feel comfortable in your own home.  Below are examples of some colors and the moods they help create.

Red: Increases energy levels

Yellow: Joy and happiness

Blue: Calming, relaxing and serene

Green: Calming and restful

Orange: Excitement and energy

When remodeling, use the power of color to pick your color palette based on how you want to feel. Keep in mind that the intensity of a color can also change the mood of a room.

A huge thanks to the “village” that worked to put this sanctuary together.  Our builder – Pat Widing, architectural drawing by Chris Macklin Design, Joan Gilbert for the design work, and Kali Weber, owner of Chatham House Interior Design, for completing the rooms and adding finishing touches to pull it all together and make it look fabulous!
